Medusa, also known as the Gorgon, is one of the three Gorgons in Greek mythology, along with her sisters Euryale and Stheno.  Being the only mortal, she was beheaded by the hero Perseus. He handed her mask, the gorgóneion, to Athena, who attached it to her shield. Her eyes had the power to petrify all who met her gaze. Personal illustration.
