Egyptian cartoonist and journalist Ashraf Omar was abducted from his home in Cairo by security forces agents on the night of July 22, 2024. According to Al-Manassa, an independent media outlet that publishes his cartoons online, the local authorities denied any involvement in the cartoonist’s disappearance in response to initial requests from his lawyer and family members. 

Accused of joining a terrorist group, publishing and disseminating false news and using social networks inappropriately, Ashraf Omar was beaten and tortured before his official arrest on 24 July. He still remains in pre-trial detention on September 8th, 2024. Personal illustration.
